Some potentially dangerous skin changes resemble an ordinary spot or mole. Treating them with light without a diagnosis can delay recognition. A spot that grows, changes shape, itches or bleeds especially needs examination.

Changes to Notice at Home

The ABCDE guide offers clues: asymmetry, an irregular border, uneven color, diameter and evolution over time. Evolution is particularly practical: compare with earlier photographs and nearby moles. A spot that looks unlike your others is also worth noting. These signs are not a home test to rule out skin cancer; a small or atypical lesion may lack several of them.

Examine more than the face. Cheeks often attract attention in summer, but new lesions can develop on the back, legs or around a nail. A mole that bleeds without injury, a sore that fails to heal or a visible change over several weeks warrants a dermatology visit rather than waiting for a planned autumn cosmetic course.

Preparing for the Dermatology Visit

Write down when you first noticed the spot and what changed in its color, edges, size or sensation. Bring earlier photographs if it appears in them. Tell the doctor about skin cancer in your family and previous sunburns. Avoid covering the spot with heavy long-wear makeup or trying to remove it with a home acid: the clinician needs to see its original features.

The dermatologist may use magnification and decide whether anything further is required. If the lesion proves to be a benign pigment spot, aesthetic options can then be discussed. Neither an article nor a photo-analysis app can replace an in-person route for a suspicious change.

Why Not Begin With “One-Size-Fits-All” IPL?

IPL addresses selected aesthetic concerns; it does not diagnose a skin lesion. Solar lentigines, melasma, post-inflammatory marks and changing moles are not interchangeable. Indications, risk of darkening and follow-up differ. A responsible consultation may end with monitoring, treating a condition or arranging further investigation without any cosmetic procedure.

Can a Tan Hide a Concerning Change?

More freckles and uneven coloring during travel can distract from one unusual lesion. Compare it with older pictures and neighboring spots: is this particular area changing shape or shade? Do not assume it must be harmless because you often develop freckles. Risk is not determined by one sunny holiday alone, and even a familiar spot deserves checking if it has changed.

Assessment Before Aesthetic Correction

Once the cause is known and concerning conditions have been ruled out, the specialist can discuss skincare, photoprotection or a procedure. Sometimes monitoring or non-cosmetic treatment comes first. If IPL is proposed, ask why this particular lesion is an appropriate target and what reaction is expected. Do not ask for every unexamined dark spot to be treated “while you are there.” In complex cases, it is safer to separate the diagnostic visit from the aesthetic decision.

What Should You Do While Waiting for Your Appointment?

Protect the area from further sun with clothing and suitable SPF on intact exposed skin. Do not cut, burn or bleach a lesion at home. If it bleeds, protect the skin gently and arrange an in-person assessment; a peel cannot conceal a diagnosis. Prepare a short history and earlier photographs: these are more useful than saying it “used to be a bit lighter.” A rapidly changing or bleeding area needs a sooner appointment.

Should You Wait to See Whether It Fades in Winter?

Some sun-related marks may appear less conspicuous without strong sunlight, but that does not test whether a new lesion is safe. A changing, bleeding, itchy or very different spot needs an earlier examination. For a confirmed benign condition, the doctor can discuss monitoring and sun protection. When the diagnosis is unknown, a home lightening serum does not replace assessment.

Even a small painless spot should be checked if it looks notably different from the rest or changes over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wait if the spot is small? Size is not the only consideration. Changes in color or shape, itching or bleeding warrant examination.

Should I photograph every mole every day? No. Document a concerning change in ordinary lighting and have it examined. Frequent inconsistent photos can make comparisons harder.

Arrange a Medest dermatology assessment in Yerevan before choosing aesthetic removal of a new spot.
